MIFTAH UL JANNA
(Key for the way to Paradise)

ALAIKUM SALAM! It is not sunnat to greet (Salam) someone while one is reciting the Quran. When greeted, however, it is wajib to reply; the reciter pauses and then gives the Salam afterwards he continues to recite, since the recitation of the QURAN is a sunnat while responding to the Salam is a wajib. A wajib cannot be abandoned or delayed for the advantage of a sunnat, but a sunnat should be abandoned or delayed for a wajib.
